Vitiligo treatment first stops white patches from spreading and then encourages pigment to return using immune-modulating medicines, narrow-band UVB phototherapy and targeted excimer light.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which melanocytes are destroyed, causing depigmented white patches. Treatment depends on whether the disease is active (spreading) or stable, and on the pattern — segmental or non-segmental.
We first stabilise active disease with oral mini-pulse therapy or immunomodulators, then stimulate repigmentation with topical agents, NB-UVB phototherapy and targeted excimer light. Stable, resistant patches may be suitable for surgical grafting.
There is a genetic tendency, but most children of people with vitiligo do not develop it.
Face and neck respond best. Hands, feet and lips are slower and may need surgical options.
Narrow-band UVB has a long safety record when dosed and monitored by a dermatologist.
