Scar revision makes raised, wide or pitted scars and keloids flatter and less noticeable using steroid injections, cryotherapy, lasers, silicone therapy or minor surgery to realign the scar.
Scars vary — hypertrophic and keloid scars are raised and firm, atrophic scars are depressed, and contracture scars restrict movement. Effective revision depends on the scar type, location and maturity.
Techniques include intralesional steroid and 5-FU injections, cryotherapy, silicone therapy, fractional lasers, subcision and surgical revision such as Z-plasty or W-plasty to realign a scar with natural skin lines.
Keloids have a tendency to recur, so we combine removal with injections and pressure therapy to minimise this.
Surgical revision is usually best after 6–12 months, once the scar has matured. Injections can start earlier.
Scars cannot be erased, but they can be made significantly less noticeable.
